Book review: Inconceivable by ben Elton

This is the saddest funny book Ive ever read in a long time. The book revolves around a couple- Lucy and Sam Bell who have been trying to have a baby for five years. The book has been written in form of a diary where Lucy and Sam are all recording their thoughts in their individual diaries. And of course majority of what they write about is their feelings on trying to get pregnant and all they go through. So we get to see things from a man's point of view then from the woman's.

They have tried everything that has been suggested to them by their friends, family and colleagues. From flavored tea, having sex alfresco on a full moon, aromatherapy (which stinks up the house and gives Sam blocked nose), prayers (although Lucy is agnostic), performing fertility rites complete with chanting and all, massaging nutmeg oil on the crease of Lucy's bum to Lucy sleeping with her bum propped up  to make the sperms swim towards her uterus. They have read and watch all articles on trying to get pregnant. Lucy tapes anything about fertility and cuts articles off newspapers. Although some of the suggestions are ridiculous they just give it a try because everything else hasn't worked out. Its not like it can get any worse.

Readers get to see what couple who are having a hard time get pregnant go through. How they go through heartbreak after heartbreak. Although the book is sad, the author still managed to make it funny as well. You gotta read it to know how it ends. And if you have read any of Ben Elton's works you know the ending is always unpredictable.

Book review : About a boy by Nick Hornby

A while back I was walking in Nakuru town when I saw this book being sold by a hawker. I must admit that what attracted me to the book at first was Hugh Grants face on the cover. For a moment there I thought it was his biography or something. I was pleasantly surprised when I realized it was a book by writer Nick Hornby. His book 'How to be good was reviewed here. So I knew I had to get it.
 
As soon as I read the first few pages I was hooked. The story revolves around Will Freeman who is 36 unmarried play boy who lives a carefree lifestyle. He gets money off the royalties from a song a father had written years ago and doesn't have to work. He decides to join a Single Parents group for single mothers talking about an imaginary son (Ned) to pick up women until he meets young 12yr old nerdy boy named Marcus Brewer.

Will who considers himself a trendy person begins to help Marcus fit in with boys his age. He buys for him Addidas trainers, tells him to stop getting a hair cut from his mum and introduces him to music such as the band Nirvana. While Will acts like a teenager, Marcus is intelligent and acts more mature than a boy his age. Marcus discovers that Will does not have a son and things start becoming interesting at this point.

You gonna have to buy the book to see how it ends!

PS It turns out the book was adapted into a movie with Hugh Grant playing the part of Will (explains his picture on the cover) so if you are a not a fan of novels maybe you can get your hands on the movie.

Their eyes were watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

I was blog whoring a couple of days ago and I got a link to this book Their eyes were watching God You can download it and enjoy. Its not that long (200 and something pages is not that bad is it?) so those who hate reading long novels do not get your knickers in a twist.lol And just so you know, Author Zadie Smith read the book when she was just a teenager. Read this interview and hear what she had to say about it.

I read it on my phone and I loved it. If you enjoyed Titanic and Romeo and Juliet then you're definitely going to love this book. It revolves around the character Janie who while still married to Logan Killicks is convinced by Jody starks to leave her man. However things don't pan out they way Janie expected.

Then a lovely young man called Tea cakes shows up in her life and Janie finally finds true love -that she has been looking for all her life- despite the fact that he is younger and he has no money. 

A lil birdie told me that there is even a movie loosely based on the book where Halle Berry plays Janie and Michael Ealy is Tea Cakes. 

Now if anybody has that movie hook a sista up!

Just like in the book Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison the characters have the funniest names. They include; Tea Cakes,  Bootyny, leafy crawford,Motor Boat and Who flung. I just cant with these names.lol

Book review : How to be good

No no no… it’s not me telling you how to be a good person, it’s the title of the book I read while waiting for the elections results in the month of march.We all know the boat already sailed on that one, I can never tell you how to be good!

This book revolves around the character Katie who is a doctor married to David and together they have two children Molly and Tom. Katie has an affair which she blames on the fact that David is angry, cynical and basically hard to live with. David is not only bolshie but even goes to the extent of cussing in front of the children. He also contributes to the local newspaper and his column is aptly called ' the angriest man in Holloway'.

After David finds out about Katie’s affair he moves out. He ends up living with a faith health called DJ Good news. After an encounter with this faith healer, David changes and becomes good. Annoyingly nice... which drives his family insane just as he did when he was an angry man. He gives out the family's money. Gives out the kids toys and computers. Katie comes home to find he has taken in some children from god-knows-where. He tries to get the rest neighbourhood to take in needy kids in their homes. David also quits his job which entailed him bitching about anything and everything. He not only drives his family insane but his friends, family and neighbourhood too.

I loved this book especially because the writer Nick Hornby writes from the point of view of a woman. I swear if I didn’t google him I would have sworn the book was written by a woman. I recommend this book to every married person as the writer has some very important tips for married folks. Get the book and see how this family copes with daddy’s new attitude.

book review: Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison

I just discovered this place in town where they sell books at only 100 bob each. What's even more encouraging is that the young man who sells the books actually reads them. So when he recommended this book I did not hesitate to buy it because I knew I was not going to be disappointed. This young man sells both shoes and books at the same time and complains that women come in more for the shoes than the books. Seriously, what do you expect when you put shoes next to books. Ofcourse shoes are going to win hands down! Infact it was the shoes that attracted me the first time before I noticed the books.

Anyway I finally finished the book and it was the most interesting book I have ever read in a long time. I now understand why Toni Morrison won the nobel prize in Literature. From a woman being born without a navel, a man trying to fly, a young woman dying of heartbreak( yes heart break), a dead man's bone kept smack in the livingroom in somebody's house to people talking to ghosts of people who died. Do not even get me started on the weird names some of the characters had Erie Lackawanna, Empire State, Hospital Tommy, Railroad Tommy, First corinthians, Magdalene called lena Dead and Pilate dead.

The book has very mature and controversial content which explains why it was banned in some schools for sometime. It talks about the black experience in America post slavery through the protagonists Macon "Milkman" Dead who the story revolves around. If you ever get your hands on the book please read it. I promise you, you won't put it down.

Books on relationships

There is nothing more annoying than meeting a lady who has gone through enough men to make up not one, but two rugby team but still hasn't learnt a thing about men. I think if you are a lady above 24 or cleared college you should have figured out men enough to be able to weed out the douche bags and save your little heart some pain. If you are past your mid twenties and you still have men playing with your heart then please slap yourself so that I don't have to.

It's even more tragic when a lady is a single mother and has shite taste in men. She has had men lying and laying on her and now she got them lying to your kids too. It drives me bats to see kids paying for their besotted mothers' mistakes. Like in that movie- whose names escape me now- where a character said that its sad how we need a license to drive, fish but not to be parents. Mothers literally get away with murder sometimes. And am not talking about the physically death. Its when the kids grow up the cycle of dysfunctional relationships begins all over again.

Now in the spirit of beginning a new year on a clean slate by beginning to change our lives for better I have put up a few books to give women a few pointers on how to invest in healthy relationships. I'll admit like ayla have never cared much for self-help books because I do not like to be told what to do... you know... seeing as there is my way and the wrong way. But these books really are eye opening. I have read the first two and glazed over the last two. They share quite a number of themes, most of which should be common sense but it doesn't hurt to be reminded once in a while.

(NB- Please read the books with a grain of salt and use your wisdom to take only that which will help you. The authors are from a different geographical zone from us Kenyans, different cultures, beliefs etc. Some of the advice may go against what some of you believe. e.g sex before marriage, how to dress attractively(sexy means different things to different people. etc)

 I read this book this week and it left me in stitches. The author is really funny and doesn't come off as being too preachy. I promise you wont be disappointed. Even if you think you do not need relationship advice just read it for entertainment.

I read this book back in college and it saved me a lot of drama. It gives advice and examples of mistakes that women make and questions that females ask. It is also entertaining to boot!

 This book shows people how men and women are wired differently with different emotional needs. It teaches the different sexes how to relate to one another and have healthy relationships.

Hope you have watched the movie with the same title- if only to stare at the lovely Michael Ealy.lol

Book review: Ladder of years by Anne tyler

In this book, we meet the character Delia who is a 40 year old woman married to a doctor called Sam Grinstead with three kids Sam 21, Ramsay 19 and carroll 15. After many years of marriage she begins to feel expendable; like an extra in her husband and children's lives. She misses the days when her children were young, before they turned hard-shelled. Her boys -in her own words- have grown whiskers and her daughter has bought a diary with a unpickable brass lock. She feels left out and unwanted.

One day during a family vacation by the seaside Delia walks away from it all wearing nothing but her bathing suit and a tote bag with 500 dollars inside. She runs away from her life to begin a new one. Her family thinks she has vanished without a trace and starts to look for her and eventually report to the police and the search continues.

What annoys Delia even more is when they put out an Ad asking for her whereabouts and they do not even know the colour of her eyes or what she is wearing which serves to make her decision to leave justified in her eyes. Now you will have to get the book to know how the story unfolds. I promise you won't be disappointed.

ps. In the final pages of the book there is a record of an interview of the author which will give you an insight into what was going through Anne Tyler's head when she wrote this book. great book this one!

They F*** you up

I was walking in town when I came across a book in a shop with the above title and I knew I just had to take a peak inside never mind that it was raining cats and dogs and I was drenched to the skin. I thought it was all about the governement or aliens and all- as if. Then I opened the first page and I see this disturbing poem;

And I imediately knew I had to get it- so i did.lol

The book authored by Dr.Oliver is about the nurture verses nature argument with the writer arguing for the belief that we are who we are because of how we were raised not genes. He believes that the early childhood is very cucial in determining how a child turns out especially the first 6years. He advices that people be careful about the people they leave their children with for the overall well being of the child. He stresses on the importance of getting it right for the first 6 years of a childs life. Unconditional love, praise and warmth and affection is what he says is the recipe for raising health children with high self esteem.

Dr. Oliver reckons that people prefer blaming everything on genes because it removes all blame from parents. The author is against belief that the poor are poor, the mad mad and the bad bad etc largely because of their genes. This is because if this is true then there is no point for the government to increase spending on education for the less fortunate in the society or talking therapies or enlightment regimes...you know seeing as we cant exactly change our genes.

He also answers the question why siblings are so different from each other, yes even twins despite the fact that they have the same parent, raised in the same house etc. The book states that siblings have different brain patterns because according to the author siblings do not have the same parents. Each parent treats each child so differently that they might as well have been raised in completely different families. So if you compare the treatment you got from your parents with those of your siblings you will notice the differences

There are very many factors that contribute to why parents treat each child differently or rather what makes their brain pattern different and it includes;

a)Parents are at different stages in their lives when the different children are born and very often so is the state of their marriage eg children from broken homes are at a greater risk of a litany of psychological problems

b) the birth order of the children

c) the gap between siblings

d) the size of the family eg large families of five or more siblings are more likely to be emotionally deprived.

e) Physical beauty(preferential treatment is given to the more attractive child by parents)

f) If the parents are educated or not

g) the care givers9apart fro the mother) who were around the child in the early stages

h) the sex of the child (eg some parents may have bee looking forward to a girl or boy and may express this infront of the child who was not the deired sex)

i) If there is a death of a parent(s)

Dr. Oliver gives lots of examples from not only his own family but from politicians, criminals, celerities, dictators, entertainers etc like Elton john, Michel jackson, margaret thatcher (and her daughter carol and son mark), prince charles (and his father Philip), Jeffrey archer, mark Chapman(who shot John lenon), Mia furrow( and the whole fiasco with Woody allen and Sooni Yu), Hitler, stalin, napoleaon, Amin, Gandhi, leo Tolstoy, Charles darwin, kenyatta, Hochi Min, John Hinkley etc. He even has documented some recordings of his interviews with the different personalities to show his point across. He also tackles the subject of Homosexuality, mental illness, Divorce, Inteligence, depression and of sexual devianys such as rapists.

He also says that anyone who claims to have had a perfect childhood can be certain that he/she is in denial and tales of an idyllic childhood is self deception. (In another book I'm also currently reading, one character tells a young lady that 'Any baggage you have ceases to be only yours  the minute that sperm hits that egg.' No one did not suffer some degree at their hands of their parents.And that parent do not band out cruelty evenly. Most usually focus on one child who is usually the recepient of the mother's negativity.

However be that as it may. Dr. Oliver states categorically that the book is not meant to bash parents. He meant it to encourage people to be better parents and not let their own histories affect them or recreate the same problems in their children. This is because those who forget their past are bound to repeat it. As one wise person said- you cannot change what you do not acknowledge.

I recommend this book to any one who has children or intends to have some pickneys in future. It is also great for psychology students to add some bit of knowledge on the nurture vs nature argument as the writer also quotes some of the theories and arguments that have been brought forth by other prominent psychologists.

love in the time of cholera

In this book, young Florentino Ariza falls madly in love with Fermina Daza and desires to marry her. However her father prefers she marry the wealthy Dr. Juvenal Urbino. Florentino being a love child doesn't stand a chance next to the well-born Dr. Urbino. Being the hopeless romantic that he is, even after she marries Urbino, Florentino continues to carry a torch for her. He believes that they are destined to be together and decides to wait for Urbino to pass on.

In the mean time he has 622 affairs with different women. The dalliances range form crazy to down right ridiculous. Like this widow Prudencia that he slept with had a habit of ripping off his clothes so that he could stay in her house longer after the sex as she sewed the buttons back on. There is another lady who had the habit of sucking his fingers. One time while sleeping witha married woman they wake up to find the house had been broken into and everything was gone except the bed they were sleeping on. He almost slept with a murderer who had escape from an asylum. He sleeps with all kinds of women, young, old, widowed, married, spinsters, prostitutes all the while still pinning for his lovely Fermina.

Fifty one years, nine months and four days later, Urbino finally dies after falling off a ladder and Florentino seizes the opportunity to ask Fermina out again. The story is so romantic and beautiful it took my breath away. Imagine a man carrying a torch for you for decades? If that is not love then I do not know what love is. Now you will have to read the story to find out how it ends. You will thank me later!

ps. The book begins a little slowly so don't give up because it gets juicy as you proceed. I would recommend it for people above 20 because it has very solid advice about relationships and marriage. The language used maybe too mature fore teenagers and children.I swear Gabriel Garcia has a way with words yawa!

Father Frank by Paul Burke

The book begins with the protagonist Francis Dempsey who doesn’t believe in God and spends most of the time in church during mass just day dreaming. His father who is a devout catholic nudges him to listen to the whole church service. He doesn’t understand how the tiny round wafer is possibly the body of Christ and the bottle of Mosaic Cyprus Sherry his blood. And if it were why people would want to drink it? He finds the term “good Friday” a misnomer especially since they ban all forms of pleasure during Easter. He looks at the picture of Christ and wonders how we know he looks like that yet none of the gospels contain a reference of exactly what he looked like. He reckons the praises that are heaped on Jesus sound like groveling and sycophancy.

He finds kneeling beside a wardrobe telling a strange man your innermost secrets strange. He has problems with wrapping his head around the notion of papal infallibility. Anyone who is curious about the catholic church will find this book useful and informative. Having gone to a catholic high school myself I was able to understand some of the things we did in church back then. He questions everything about the church but doesn’t dare saying it openly, if anything he feels guilty for entertaining such thoughts. He there is a higher power but admits he has trouble believing some things he is taught in church. He argues that the Catholic Church should have stuck to using Latin in during mass as it made it more spiritual; it put the ‘Roman’ back into Roman catholic. He thinks that the Catholic Church started declining when they started doing mass in English and because some meaning got lost in translation some of the things started to sound meaningless to the faithful..

He failed in high school and gets a D, E and O in that order in the 3 subjects that he did. He finds this funny especially since DEO means “God” in Latin and he doesn’t believe in him. After high school he works as a Dj and enjoys it immensely although it is not seen as a real job in his family. He knows sooner or later he has to get a “real job”. As the plot develops, through a series of very interesting events he gets a chance to go study theology in Oxford University. His date with Mandy Wheeler, the–most-beautiful-girl-in-north-west-London, is disastrous and he decides that if he can’t find Mandy attractive then he might as well become a priest. Those who know him well like his sister are skeptical whether he will able to survive priesthood, especially the part about celibacy!

Contrary to the people’s opinion, Francis leaves behind his over-active sex life, he finds fulfillment as a priest helping people despite the fact that he still doesn’t believe in God. He goes by the title “Father Frank” which is the title of the book. He genuinely loves people and enjoys helping around in the parish. The congregation too loves him and he manages to rally the community together and give the whole neighbor hood a pleasant change.

The whole book is funny following his antics in the London parish, which reminds me of Whoopie Goldberg’s character in SISTER ACT. He drives a taxi, which one parishioner left for him in his will, to raise money for his parish. He tries to open a packet of Kit Kat without making any sound while listening to people’s confessions. He uses thick knitting needless to play the drums using old boxes in his office. The thoughts that go through his head when talking to his parishioners are hilarious. He manages to get away with not believing in God and no one finds this out until much later in the book.

His love of music develops into a habit of going to peoples houses and collecting records under the guise of wanting to sell them to raise money for the church. His taste in music is eclectic as seen by his collection of a wide array of records from rock n roll, Motown, funk, punk and rap. The writer mentions famous singers like the beetles, Marvin gaye,Elvis presely, Isley brothers, Dusty springfield, Donny Hathaway, Sinatra, Simply red, Jim reeves, Michael Bolton, Light house family and James brown. There others that I’m not au fait with like, Brenda Shine, Billy paul, William De Vaughans, Clarence carter, Sandy Nelson, The surfaris, Tom Jones, the valentine brothers, Human league, Rod stewart and the faces, Cozy powell, Levi Stubb, Roy Orbinson, The drifters, Leo sayer, Charllie Rich, led Zeppelin, Genesis, Harry Belafonte, Dean Martin, The Pogues, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Kevin Johnson, Brian Protheroe, Meltorme, The Omens, Faron Young, Ella Fitzgerald, Engelbert Humperdick and Sam and dave. Father frank reckons ‘ A quick examination of musical taste was an almost fool proof guide to somebody’s character’. This is the second book that I have read this year to make the same observation (I wonder what my taste in music says about me?)

As a Dj he knew how to bring the people together and have fun. He also knew how to sense people’s moods which helped him in church too to deliver the appropriate sermon. This makes him a darling to all the parishioners that he serves. Everything is going well until he  lovely Sarah Marshall steps into his black taxi a Suzuki X7 then his life starts to turn upside down. His inner and outer turmoil begins which forces him to make another life altering decision. This book is hilarious and any one should read it, no matter their religious persuasion.

p.s. Don’t worry it has a very happy ending.

What do Catholic priests have over Baptist pastors or Anglican vicars that make them so popular with writers of fiction? In a word: celibacy.

White teeth by Zadie Smith

The book follows the lives of two best friends Samad Iqbal who is an immigrant from Bangladesh and Archie Jones who is an English man. The two friends who met while serving during the war are both married to much younger women. The book starts with Archie whose frustrated with his Italian wife who left him after a troubled childless marriage and tries to kill himself. He gets interrupted and realizes that he wants to live. He then meets and marries Clara who is a Jamaican woman and together they have a daughter called Irie. 

Samad who marries a young woman called Alsana through a traditionally arranged marriage gets twin boys named Millat and Magid. Samad struggles to keep his Islamic faith in the English country and decided to send one of his sons back to his home country so that he gets an Islamic upbringing. The two boys end up drifting apart and become complete opposite in terms of beliefs. Irie becomes pregnant after sleeping with two men in the same day. She can’t know who the father is seeing as ...well you have to read the book to find out why!

The story is mainly about the lives of immigrants and their children as they try to survive in a foreign land and society. There is the conflict between between trying to adapt in this new society while maintaining and preserving their culture. Samad is especially concerned about his children loosing their identities and fully assimilating in this new society. They all feel lost as they try their best to find where they fit in their new environment. The writer as most reviews observed use the title ‘White teeth’ to show that despite all the different backgrounds, all these people are unified in that they all have white teeth. Irie desires to be a dentist which is also viewed as an attempt to unify everyone.

The writer manages to retain the momentum from beginning to end. Unlike some novels which normally plateau somewhere in between this one kept me interested from beginning to end. What even impressed me more is that the author, Zadie Smith wrote this book when she was only 25 years old back in 2000 and managed to win numerous awards like the Whitebread best first novel award. There are so many things I learned from this book as the writer writes the most profound things. Her use of language is so sophisticated, something I would expect from a veteran writer and not in a debut book. This book literally blew me away. I’ve never read anything like it. (And no she didn’t pay me to advertise)  It doesn’t hurt that she is also beautiful to boot.

 

PS- I scored the bridesmaid by Paul Howard

I have finished reading the second book.yay! This book had me at the title and I could not put it down. The suspense at the end left me wanting more too.  I read it in the toilet, in the matatu and even at the bank queue. It follows the style of “Huckleberry Finn” and “The Catcher in the Rye” whereby a young man is struggling to make a transition from being a boy into a man. The story follows the fictional character Ross journey as he prepares to marry his sweetheart Sorcha and struggles with making major decisions.

I always knew men were naughty but this book scared the shite out of me. You wouldn’t believe the mischief this husband-to-be and his best men are up to -sort of like in the movie “Hangover”. Like they have this thing where they sleep with many women and steal CD’s from their bedrooms. They call it the “Petty Pilfering championship” whereby the winner has to collect 50CD’s (they call it the P.P. collection) and choose one for the looser who is supposed to perform (karaoke) while standing in a bar.LOL

They actually judge women by the kind of music they listen to. Wow I didn’t know that some men do that! Sorcha, his girl friend even says she has been a little b*tchy lately which she blames on listening to a lot of Mary J. Blige OUCH! Ross reckons that the lady she stole from the Jessica Simpsons- in my skin CD has shite taste in music and shite taste in men. They can also tell the age of women by the kind of CD they listen to, like one of the best men stole “Elvis Presley gospel songs” from a 46 yr old woman hahaha. Apparently they do not discriminate. This gets Ross in trouble when one of the ladies he stole from put two and two together to blow their cover and goes onto rally up all the women to go to his house to collect their CD’s. It even gets funnier when one of the ladies slept with both Ross and his best man and she doesn’t know who stole which CD. Ross says it’s her fault for putting it out too much- WOIYE!

But at least a learnt of some artists whose music am not familiar with that I plan on checking out later and they include Michelle Shocked, Garth Brooks, The Nolans, Mary Chapin carpenter, Mark Owen, Danni Minogue, the lighthouse family,  and Ennio Morricone. See the great thing about books is that you learn from other cultures, talk about travelling around the world without a visa.

They pour liquor into the ATM machine; Ross even kills one of his lady friend’s pet and even try some spiritual stuff - am talking Ouija boards and communicating with the dead stuff. He tries to make a porno movie and even tries surfing yet he doesn’t even know how to swim and many dangerous stunts that readers should be advised not to try at home. On the advice of his girlfriend he gets on an Atkins diet and over indulges then ends up being unable to go for number two #icant.

The only issue I have with the book is that they use a lot of jargon that is familiar to the writer which one reviewer says only people from Dublin can understand. Like the word “Gaff” to mean house, million sheets for money, playing kool and the gang for being calm, scoops for liquor, seriously lost the plot for being crazy, top tens for breast and some acronyms like OTT, SP and PTS. 

They also break a lot of grammar rules that will drive the grammar nazis insane like writing words exactly how they pronounce it like goys for guys, porty for party, roysh for right, cor for car, orse for a**.I guess publishers are now flexible enough to allows some writers to be liberal with their language use. But the great thing is that one can easily infer from the story to get the meaning for words.

I would really recommend this book to any man who intends to get married and see what grooms go through during the planning of the wedding from bridezilla’s, getting money, proposing and letting go of the old bachelor life. I wish it could be adapted into a movie because it really is hilarious, I kept on laughing in the matatu that the passengers thought I had lost the plot (you know I had to use this here.lol)
